Conch Shell (Great Indian Chank)
DESCRIPTION
A solid, heavy shell with a very inflated body whorl, a short spire, and a long, broad siphonal canal. The shell is smooth or has low lumps at the shoulder and spiral ridges at the base of the body whorl. Underneath a thick periostracum, the shell is milk-white, often tinged pink. Indian chanks are sent to Bengal to be made into jewelry and ornaments.
